LSU’s women’s basketball team just won their first-ever national championship, but they also set a record for the highest score in a women’s national basketball game. However, things weren’t all happy. Angela Reese, the team’s captain, began to receive some backlash on social media.
During the game, there was a gesture that she had made towards Iowa’s Caitlin Clark. Many people online began to criticize her and say she lacked sportsmanship. Many forgot that Caitlin had made this same gesture in a different game, and the responses were completely different. The media tried to pan out Angela as the bad guy, which is typically how they see black women. More so, they often try to pit women against each other. Both athletes came forward and explained that there is no beef between them. Caitlin stated, “I’m just one that competes, and she competed. I think everybody knew there was going to be a little trash talk in the entire tournament. It’s not just me and Angela.” It wouldn’t be basketball without a little trash talk.Once teams secure the championship, whether it be winning the Super Bowl or the NBA finals, they receive a lot of recognition. They also may receive an invite to the White House. Although, it is usually only the winning team going. Not according to the First Lady. Jill Biden went on to say that she wants both teams to make an appearance. Angela immediately laughed at the thought and began to point out the obvious. She stated, “I just know if the roles were reversed, it wouldn't be the same. If we were to lose, we would not be getting invited to the White House. I remember she made a comment that both teams should be invited because it was about sportsmanship.” Some people called her comments entitled, but she has a right to feel this way. If the roles were reversed? LSU would not be getting an invite.

I feel like Reese's celebration or taunting towards Clark should have never been blown out of proportion the way that it was. All sports have athletes who trash talk, it is apart of the nature of the game. I said in a different comment that the way people view Clark versus Reese is why the same actions caused Reese to be seen as classless and Clark as America's princess. People were trying to say that they did not agree with it when Clark did it but there was never any uproar when it actually took place. When people rally behind someone, anything that is done out of their favor causes an issue. The crazy part of it all is that Clark did not even care the Reese did the hand waving thing, she agrees that taunting is apart of the game and people need to realize that that is all it is.
ReplyDeleteIt's not fair that Angela Reese is receiving backlash for making the same gesture that Caitlin Clark did in a different game. The double standard is quite evident here, and it's disappointing to see people jumping on the bandwagon without understanding the full context. I think the First Lady was trying to be nice, but having both teams visit the White House is weird. I get the First Lady's sentiment about sportsmanship, but the invite has historically been reserved for the winners. Having Iowa's team there takes away from LSU's victory.
